History and Purpose of the Sports Hall of Fame

The Sports Hall of Fame was founded in 2001 by Steve Groat, Mike Kise, and Dale Volpe as a not for profit organization.  When establishing the organization they made it clear in an interview with Hugh Miner, the founder and editor of the Crossroads Advocate, that this organization "... is not a football thing.  Nor is it an individual thing.  There is also a contributor division, specifically designed to honor individuals who may have not played sports but supported local athletics in a special way.  Keep in mind that we do not want to overlook anyone who may have become a major contributor to the world of sports after they left school and may have never played on a team during their high school years.". The criteria for inductees include "personal qualities and achievements in the area of athletics or significant community contributions that would merit that persons induction into the Sport Hall of Fame."  The Sports Hall of Fame has purpose.  The preservation of that remembrance and emotions of games gone by.  The sense of identity and the that lingers long after we have left high school.  As Mr. Miner stated in his interview, when the organization was founded, "...the Hall wants to encourage a sense of history.  It will be a place to read and consider the original achievements of every generation in every athletic endeavor."

Currently, the Sports Hall of Fame is housed at the Galen Historical Society's Mill Museum at 14 Sodus Street in Clyde, New York.
